PLASTIC: HEALTH WOUND AND ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER
Microplastics contaminate the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink .
Knowing this as mothers and responsible citizens, we were unable to remain passive! Passionate as we are, we have read numerous studies to fully understand the plastic problem.
To put a little more pressure on ourselves (to know how to act) and to boost our morale, we went through the various reports published by WWF on the subject*.
In short, after all this reading, we have formed our own idea on the subject and we are sharing our thoughts with you.
PLASTIC, A REAL HEALTH PROBLEM
Plastic has a very toxic effect on the human body because we ingest microplastics in significant quantities every day.
According to the report by the global wildlife fund WWF published in June 2019 and based on a study by the University of Newcastle: A human being would ingest around 5 grams of plastic each week, or the weight of a credit card, or around twenty kilograms over a lifetime 😰
Various studies highlight many foods and drinks containing microplastics, such as water, beer, seafood and salt.
The long-term effects of ingesting large amounts of plastic on our health are unclear, but studies are underway.
We already knew that these microplastics were present in our organs but according to a new study **, they are also present in our veins . We do not yet know all the consequences on our health but these microparticles do not only pass through our body, they are present in our body and interfere in our organs
Of 5 types of plastics searched, several were present at the same time in the veins of the people tested. Half of the samples contained PET and a third contained polyethylene.
According to a study published in 2020, because of baby bottles , babies could swallow more than a million microparticles per day ***.
Knowledge of the effects of plastic on the human body is still recent, but the effects of plastic on the environment have now been known for a long time!
PLASTIC, AN ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER
You just need to look at a few figures to understand the impact of plastic on the environment and our environment:
- A household of 4 people throws away 71 kg of plastic household packaging waste per year.
- 8 million tonnes of plastic per year end up in our oceans.
We have known for a long time that plastics pollute the oceans . Plastic also has a very detrimental effect on marine life .
In the Mediterranean Sea, more than half of anchovies and sardines are contaminated by microplastics.
WWF studies indicate that “if global plastic production indeed doubles by 2040 as projected, the quantity of plastic debris in the oceans will have quadrupled by 2050. growth rate, plastic pollution will cause significant ecological risks in many marine areas”
The impact of plastic on health and the environment is so significant that it is urgent to act, effectively and efficiently.
HOSANE, A NO PLASTIC ETHICS!
This single-use plastic which is the symbol of a consumer society which must disappear from our daily lives to preserve our health and our environment.
In our daily lives, sorting waste has been a habit acquired for a long time, but we know that this is largely insufficient!
In our lives as mothers, we are not always able to impose zero waste on ourselves, but we have adopted several habits that allow us to significantly reduce single-use plastic : shopping in bulk, replacing water bottles with water bottles , water filters (ceramic beads, charcoal, etc.), reusable menstrual protection (cup, menstrual panties), bento boxes for our meals on the go and many others...
To go further in our approach, we ban plastic, but those that are still in our daily lives we recycle, which is why we are very interested in projects that aim to improve recycling, which is still very low (around 20%). . ¨ Plasticapp is a project that rewards selective sorting and encourages eco-responsible practices. It is in a way a digital deposit, the user is rewarded for each plastic packaging waste that he places in a yellow selective sorting bin. Plastic App is developing Gameplay around sorting in which users will be able to use their cryptocurrencies to progress in the game. So do you want to play eliminating plastic?
As soon as we imagined Hosane, we clearly established ourselves:
- To use in plastic-free packaging
- To have infinitely reusable containers
After much research, testing and development, we chose containers made from plant-based sugar cane for certain products and glass for others. Our refills are also plastic-free.
At Hosane, “no plastic” is our ethic 😊
